I have not seen a more persistent creature than this female garden spider. She just would not give up. She decided to build her fancy home right through the path to the compost pile in our garden. Every other day Natalya or I had to break through the web. Sure enough, the very next morning a brand new custom designed net was tightly vibrating on the sunrise breeze exactly at the same place. I think she had an unconscious desire to catch me in her trap one day.
For you, amateur entomologists: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_garden_spider Please pay attention to the fact that a female spider devours a male after mating. Poor guy. What a price to pay for a minute of pleasure! Or is it a fault of an uncontrollable female after-sex appetite?

Tales From My Garden: The Constant Gardener

I hardly think she could catch and hold you in her trap. Maybe she just wanted your attention.
VZ: Well, in this case she got what she wanted. The question is what she's going to do with a waterfall of my attention?
Amazing...Spider man a likey for me. i love the web effect... no further comment
VZ: well, a spiderwoman, to be exact.
Wonderful closeup of a garden spider.
VZ: Damn! That's what it is! I was wondering what I took a picture of.
I like the general symmetry of the shot and what I guess is a reflection of light down the centre of the web?
VZ: The "general symmetry"? As opposed the "particular symmetry"? I got to look it up, Nig. The reflection of light is actually not a reflection of light. It's a special web design that the spider came up with. Seriously.
Truly beguiling shot. (:o)
VZ: Had to look it up in the dictionary for "beguiling", Roz.
be·guile 1. To deceive by guile; delude. See Synonyms at deceive. 2. To take away from by or as if by guile; cheat: a disease that has beguiled me of strength. 3. To distract the attention of; divert: “to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming” (Abraham Lincoln). 4. To pass (time) pleasantly. 5. To amuse or charm; delight. Which one of these is yours?
Nice flash of light coming from behind the spider.
VZ: Ah, if I knew you'd like the light so much, I would removed for you the spider, Aussie. She's such a nuisance here.
Oh, I completely agree with your fascination evoked by spidernets, and often I have observed them working with energy and persistence, a fascinating pic indeed, only the greenish colours look a bit strange for me, I remind more of brown-sunlighted colours, but the shimmering, glimmering atmosphere you have captured well, and the thunderboltlike lines are well added (by prcessing?). Your introduction -sentences (you write an elegant English style)are inspiring again to think over 'catching'/captive and male-female-relationship. The symbolic character of the spidernet is a well know motive of art and metaphor in all our languages..!
VZ: Spiders are amazing creatures, Philine. How in the world they can produce a material that is stronger, tougher and more flexible than anything else ever invented by humans? The thunderbolt-like lines are not a product of my inventiveness. I can't take credit for that, I'm not that smart.
I've never seen a web like this before. What is the thick white zig-zag through the centre?
VZ: Apparently, not many amateur entomologists among those who visit my website, Ian. The article, I posted the link to, explains the zig-zag pattern funtionality for this type of spiders.
No comment without any poem (but this fits and is adding a new aspect), ach ja!
Walt Whitman : A noiseless, patient spider (from Leaves of Grass, 1900) A noiseless, patient spider, I mark’d, where, on a little promontory, it stood, isolated; Mark’d how, to explore the vacant, vast surrounding, It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself; Ever unreeling them— ever tirelessly speeding them. And you, O my Soul, where you stand, Surrounded, surrounded, in measureless oceans of space, Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing,— seeking the spheres, to connect them; Till the bridge you will need, be form’d— till the ductile anchor hold; Till the gossamer thread you fling, catch somewhere, O my Soul.
VZ:
"...seeking the spheres to connect them, till the bridge you will need be formed...". I think Mr. Whitman and I are in full agreement here, allegorically sharing our fascination with these amazing creatures.
even her web has your initials repeated throughout the web!
As a famous Scottish king Robert the Bruce once observed, in the face of defeat, while watching a little spider in a cave, "Try - Try and Try again". mal
VZ: "even her web has your initials repeated throughout the web!" hahaha One can see her mind is excessively preoccupied with me.
It must be spider day. This is a great shot Vik - looks like the spider is dancing!
VZ: She was dancing, Chris! As soon as I put my camera to her nose, she starts swing her web so vigorously, I have to step back a bit.
Great job ! It's so graphic, the cob web itself, the web and that strange zebra light in the middle... lovely green tonality.
VZ: Looks you liked everything you saw here, dear.
Hi Viktor, I am having problems replying to your e mail. It has happened a couple of times. When I try to send it I get an error message `Unexpected data after address@syntax-error`.
However to answer you question Hi Viktor, Well I guess it could be 1, as in `the spider beguiles its prey`. But that was not the way I intended the comment to be read. Nor is it 2. My meaning was mostly 3, in that it distracts the attention and focuses and holds it (as if with some sort of magical spell) on this mesmerizing image. Of course, you have to also throw in a touch of 4 and 5, too. (:o) Kindest regards Roz
VZ:
with beguiling regards, Z
brilliant shot vz
VZ: tell this to my boss, will you, doc?
I will not try to answer your question
I like the greenish tone and I love the spider design of the web, and not to forget the spider itself...
VZ: you chickened out answering the question, Aksel. Ray didn't, and I like his answer.
Superb image, VZ.
I believe the mate-eating thing is about quality-control....if the sex is really good, the gal allows the mate to survive for a return encounter; if the sex is not good then the boy pays the penalty.
VZ: Oh, Ray. Thanks for the so much needed laugh, man. You came to a brilliant logical conclusion. Thank God we're not spiders.
I came back to follow the weblink. Very interesting. We have nothing like the writing spider on this side of the pond.
VZ: In this case, Ian, some day I might post a picture or two more of these fascinating creatures.
Lovely
VZ: That's what I thought.
I was gonna say something about an Old Wive's Tale, Viktor, but then I'd live to regret it, HA! Those spiders DO know how to spin their webs. It always amazes me! And you apparently caught her in the act!
VZ: You broke the non-reciprocation rule again, dear. I have to think of a nonviolent punishment for you.
"...you apparently caught her in the act!" Do you mean she just ate her husband?
Saw this yesterday, loved it then, love it more now
VZ: When was it last time, when S&S return to see the image once again? Perhaps, something was in the food at dinner that forced them to go back.
Cracking shot mate! lol...I love this, I saw the thumbnail and i danced around a bit.
VZ: I wish I saw you dancing the spider dance, Ada.
Why don't I have a garden!!!
VZ: why don't you, dear?
wow Victor thats a incredible shot for sure, amazingly well seen and captured
VZ: with all my pleasure, Tim.
Well, you have captured this notorious creature beautifully.
VZ: No argue on that from me, nana.
Are there writing spiders in Ghana? |
