Life is a gift?
Huh?
From whom?
vz-nostalgia: smile How much did you pay for yours, Ray? smile

The difference between a gift and a non-gift is not in money, only. Sometimes you are required to do something in kind.

Like Jacob had to work for Rachael.

I believe that Ray could be a special case. If he didn't pay for it, maybe someone else did. I would not expect him to be the result of the normal procreational process.

The negative part of the argument concerns the word 'gift', in as it would indicate something you received, without having had a legal claim on it. It is also supposed to be to a person's benefit and would possibly make that person happy and grateful. The clap would be an example of something that you can receive free of charge (although some pay for it) and leave you unhappy and not very grateful. There is also the example of something you receive for free and it will make you happy, but you have a legal claim to it. Referred to as inheritance.

So, when I read: "Life is a gift", one could also think it may have meant - 'who said I wanted it in the first place'. Which brings to mind Ecclesiastes.

VZ: …and got Leah instead. smile And then, I don’t think he slaved seven years in kind. smile

VZ: Well, the first “tube baby” was introduced to the world in 1978, and because Ray is at least 100 years old, I don’t think he qualifies for the abnormal “procreational” (if there is such a word smile) process. smile

VZ: Hey, don’t want the gift? No problem, Louis. And even though you can’t re-gift it, you can always give it back. So many people do exactly that.

i hate it! but that's cos I hate smokers! i hope i read this title right and it means you are BINNING YOUR BUTT and giving up and being kind to your lungs treating them with the proper respect they deserve...

lol....when did my comments have such an AGENDA lol
vz-nostalgia: You are not reading the title right, Ms. Zhen. smile I don’t smoke. I quit, when we came to the US, because I couldn’t afford the cigarettes at first. Later, when I could afford them, I didn’t start smoking, because I didn’t want to. smile

Read this as a visual concept of our life in miniature, Ms. Zhen. A cigarette is fresh, crispy, good smelling and virgin at first. At the end, when all the juices are sucked out and it becomes useless, it gets thrown out, buried or left to die at the curb. smile

Sheese, what comments!

Viktor, I'll focus on your photo. You are the master of contrast again; and the out of focus on the right drives the eye directly to the crushed butt, tastefully being one of the Marlboro Man's remnants.

Peace, JDB (Now that's a gift that requires constant effort.)
vz-nostalgia: smile ah, and I started thinking no one pays attention to my pictures anymore, John. smile Looks like folks enjoy playing with my titles. smile
A simple message can say it all, Viktor, though I see it has sparked some serious philosophical perspectives..well, I'm not too sure about Ray's. He might have his head in the sand alongside that cigarette butt. smile
vz-nostalgia: The simpler the message, the deeper it sinks into us, Ms. Suzanne. smile

vz-nostalgia: What prevents you to LIVE then, Ms. Eva? Do you feel that a piece is missing in the puzzle of your life? smile

... to waste it on poisonous thoughts and things smile
As to the gift.. I think everybody who manages to quit smoking makes a great gift to him-/herself.
vz-nostalgia: there are many ways to waiste one's life, Ms. Iris. smile
The photo is very cute
vz-nostalgia: It would never occur to me to describe the photograph this way, Sergio. smile I'd say it is well built. Nothing to add and nothing to subtract. smile I might make this last sentence my motto. smile

Smocking is not good, drinking is not good, eating salt, sugar, fat food is not good, breathing chernobyl and fukushima radiations is not good, working 8 or9 hours by day is not good, life is dangerous but without risk life is boring...I want to smoke ,drink breathe and eat before I die..:o)
I think the excess is bad, we just know how to balance pleasure and health ...
and personally I dont know if life is always a gift .. but that's another debate ..:o)
I send you my best thoughts Mr Viktor..Thanks for your visit..:o))
vz-nostalgia: You French always know how to balance your life. smile You smoke, drink, eat white bread with butter... and still stay slim as a nation. smile We, Americans spend tons of money on diets, non-fat food, special excercises...and still two thirds of the nation is overweight. smile
Ms. Clo, one thing I need to tell you, though. I'd rather be bored than wandering around Chernobyl or Fukushima. smile
the depth of field here is crazy.
vz-nostalgia: smile It sure is, Ms. Jada, because we're in teh kingdom of delightful madness. smile
Everyone hates a quitter, Viktor
vz-nostalgia: This sure makes a catchy phrase, Thomas, though I'm sure it's far from teh truth.smile For some reason a stupid rhyme comes to mind: quitter-twitter. smile Maybe, because there is too much of Anthony Weiner on American news channels nowadays. smile
Forgot to add that I'm a quitter myself ... 7 years now! Didn't tweet about it, though smile
vz-nostalgia: and why not? Was there no one who cared enough about that? smile Hope not. smile
LOVELY! Context is on point. U get this feeling of isolation and finality. Very good. I hope the Marlb@*o people don't mind though . . . .
vz-nostalgia: Marlb@ro people get hit by the multi-million dollar suits for ruined lives, families, peoples' health all the time. Don't think they will bother with a single picture of an unknown amateur photographer. smile

I know you won't like me saying that mr VZ..but you should send it to be the next -stop-smoking campaign..
:O
ps.- id' stop smoking...and I do not smoke smile
vz-nostalgia: Well, to tell you the truth, Ms. KA, teh image to me is not about smoking per se. I was just fascinated with the texture, teh curve of the line, and the opportunity to make something extraordinary out of ordinary. smile
Non sempre la vita è un dono. Un caso molto spesso.
vz-nostalgia: Explain to me your point, Ms. Stef.
