The Well of Past: When Bullets Pick The Date

The night was hot, as many summer nights in Vienna. Though, this muggy July night of 1927 was just unbearably unpleasant for the lady in full dress. The train was slowly arriving to the Westbahnhof station. "Oh,  that waltz... the two of us in the big ballroom..." She tried to brush aside those memories. She took one last look into her pocket mirror, touched up her lips, adjusted her black hat with netting veil. She knew he'll come to meet her and that was making her nervous...

(Do you know the end of the story? Tell me).

The months steps up one at a time and the years also one year at a time. What would the purpose be of it all. Like some random notation.

Have you ever read John Irving's book about the bears being freed from the Vienna zoo? Somewhere in it the main character's mother got shot by Russian occupiers, setting him free to become the chicken man - only it was round and about 1946.

Your story reminded me of that part of the book. Now, can you beat that kind of a set-up with your story? Let's see smile
vz-nostalgia: I'm not allowed to compete with John Irving, Louis, as we are in the different brain weight categories. smile But you and I are of teh same intellectual weight. smile So, finish teh story first and then let's see. smile

This is a dark & evil past Vik: and are those bullet holes?
vz-nostalgia: All holes are what we imagine them to be, Chris. smile
Nice capture and dito crop
vz-nostalgia: ...capture... crop... I have no idea what you are talking about, Ms. Chantal. smile
A loud bang startled her, it pierced through her. She felt hot and clammy in the heat of the night. She glanced quickly into the mirror, she can see them dancing in the reflection, she feels dizzy from the spin of the Waltz. His arms envelop her. Shes drifting away to the soft sound of the music caressing her ear. My love.
1929..... The sweet sound of music, the waltz, they danced
togeather again. smile
vz-nostalgia: smile I see you took a romantic path to finish the story, Ms. Linda. smile You must be a big fan of paperback love and romance books. smile

...and anxiously strolling along platform No. 2...

Days passed...
Months passed...
Years passed...

She reluctantly carved out her path with her emptied lipstick casing, in chronological order...

Only if she knew he's waiting for her on platform No. 6...

Why didn't you tell her it was No. 2, Viktor? You could have been waltzing all night long by now... smile
vz-nostalgia: Hahahaha. Nice take, Ti.
I didn't tell her about teh planform No.2, because they will meet again years later in April of 1945. He will be the Red Army officer and she will survive the madness of the American and British bombings of Vienna just a month earlier. smile

Damn! Forgot about the bullet holes...

".... in chronological order, before she ended her painstaking wait with a .32 in her trembling hand..."

BTW, her hand was trembling because she's too old to hold the gun steadily, that's why the multiple bullet holes... smile
vz-nostalgia: Hahahaha. Well, she survived that too. Apparently, her trembling hand has saved her. smile

As the dates where peacetime I assume the title means the holes are from bullets. What's wrong with killing a little time?
vz-nostalgia: :=) There is nothing wrong with killing time, Sam, except for the fact that you will never get it back. smile
Regarding peacetime, what if we google Vienna + July + 1927? smile I bet we can find some mentioning of flying bullets. smile
I haven't a clue VZ..all I know is that 3 years later was my birth year!
vz-nostalgia: I had no clue you were born in Vienna, Ron. smile And then, a three year pregnancy is kind of unusual for human species. smile Are you sure you weren't born in March of 1928? smile

vz-nostalgia: That is exactly what I like about you, Louis. You do your homework. smile

Louis: Вы трудны сегодня
VZ: I'm usually not easy all the time, not just today. smile

Louis: The stage is set, so what will the police find in the morning there by the Palm House park bench?
VZ: No one saw her after that night. There was some talk that she's in Hungary. Someone saw her in Budapest dining with Josephine Baker. Others say they saw her in the crowd in Paris greeting Charles Lindbergh's The Spirit of St. Louis. Some folks believed she became a mistress of Benito Mussolini, who just came to power in Italy.
The police investigation came to nothing. All they found around the bench was a tube of an expensive lipstick, a pocket mirror with an intricate enamel of a hummingbird on the lid, and a solid silver art deco cigarette case. Oh, I forgot to mention the red panties made by Barcley Lingerie and Brassieres. They were found not too far away, but disappeared shortly after. Apparently, someone took them as a memento.

Leon Trotsky was expelled from the Russian Communist Party, and expelled from Russia by Mr Stalin.

I am guessing there was an attempt on his life as he passed through Westbahnhof Station en route for Southern Hemisphere adventures.

Perhaps he was intending to meet an old flame here...
vz-nostalgia: She knew that Trotsky will pass though Vienna on his way to Paris, from where he will take off to Mexico, as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera already had a room for him. The civil unrest in Vienna messed everything up. While having his morning cup of coffee at the restaurant on the train, comrade Trotsky flipped through the German, French and Austrian papers. All of them covered the unrest on the front pages. Trotsky changed the trains at the very next stop. He decided to go through Berlin instead. He was so upset about all of this that in his essay “The Austrian Crisis And Communism“ he will write two years later: “Austria is a small body with a big head“. Little did he know that this saved his life. Her 1895 Mozin-Nagant revolver was already loaded and was inside her leather bag, next to the pocket mirror, a tube of lipstick and a silver cigarette case.
Un viaggiatore frettoloso la urtò, cadde oltre la banchina e il treno la travolse.Non lo incontrò. L'ultimo pensiero, quel valzer...
Ciao Vic
vz-nostalgia: hahahaha What a pessimistic thought, Ms. Mela. Perhaps, you've read "Anna Karenina" not long ago. smile
Ciao Stef.

During the Austrian July Revolt of 1927 (also known as Black Friday), 84 protesters were killed by Austrian police forces[1], while four policemen died, on 15 July 1927. More than 600 people were injured.

..when the date was full of 'bullets'...
vz-nostalgia: smile I see you like doing your homework as well, Ms. KA. smile Good for you.
"...when the date was full of 'bullets'..." This sounds like a good first sentence of an interesting book, Ms. KA. smile Want to take a shot? (yep, that's a pun smile)
linda bullock took the words right out of my mind!.... she's however a little more eloquent....july 1927 , forever marked by the bullet holes
vz-nostalgia: Does this mean you too are into the paperback romance books with half-naked Fabio on the covers, Ms. Toun? smile
very interesting image.
vz-nostalgia: That would be like saying the skies are blue and the grass is green (and the roses are red smile), Charles. smile Have you seen a boring image on Nostalgia? smile
